Thanksgiving is one of the biggest holidays in the United States.

It's always on the fourth Thursday in November.

But how did this holiday even start?

In 1620, a group of people arrived in America from England.

They were called the Pilgrims.

Their first winter was very hard, and many of them got sick.

The Native Americans helped them grow food and get through the winter.

The next fall, they had a big feast together to give thanks.

People often call this the first Thanksgiving.

These days, families get together for a big meal.

The main dish is usually roast turkey with stuffing.

Other common foods include mashed potatoes, gravy, and pumpkin pie.

Many families also watch the Macy's Parade on TV.

But there is also a sad side to this story.

Native Americans were already living on this land.

When Europeans came, they brought new diseases.

Many Native Americans got sick and died.

Over time, more and more settlers came to America.

They wanted more land, so many Native Americans lost their homes.

There were many fights and wars between the settlers and Native Americans.

Some Native Americans were killed or forced to move away.

Some were even taken and sold as slaves.

Because of this, Thanksgiving is not a happy day for everyone.

Some Native Americans call it a day of mourning and remember their history.

Today, many people want to give thanks but also show respect to Native Americans.
